Seal snacking on a sturgeon

I was out on the Columbia today cruising around a little bit downstream of the Glenn Jackson bridge when I saw this seal eating a sturgeon.  He would come up holding it in his mouth and then take a great big swing, flinging the fish out of his mouth, but holding onto the flesh, taking a bite.  That’s the fish, pretty much totally out of the water to the right of the seal’s head.  I watched him for about 20 minutes.  Pretty cool, but hard to get a good picture.  Gulls enjoying the little pieces flying off as well.

  1. Did he have a valid fishing license for that fish? I don’t think it is sturgeon open season.
